We're having a special review session (1:00-2:45) and discussing various methods for creating interesting characters. Please come prepared to discuss some of the tools you use to create good charcters - I'd ask that you come with specific tools and examples of how you use them. See below a couple of examples, forgive my lack of nuance.
Method: Have one character describe in dialogue another character or in dialogue have a character tell a story about another character.
Example:
"I'm telling you again, don't trust him! He always seems to be doing too well, nobody has returns that consistent. Remember last year when the market fell, yet he reports returns identical to the year before? He buys a new jet while the rest of us try to hold onto our savings. It didn't make sense then and what he's proposing doesn't make sense now," Says John.
Method: Have one character treat another character a certain way and add depth to both characters.
Example:
John’s eyes narrow to suspicious slits as Mr. Makoff steps off the elevator and into the foyer. Mr. Makoff holds his coat out idly, hardly noticing the young coat check attendant. The attendant scrambles to catch the long black wool coat as it falls to the ground. Before the attendant can provide a coat check slip Mr. Makoff is already half into the party, shaking hands, smiling, accosting anyone with what he perceives as a net worth worthy of his interest. John rolls the stem of his martini glass back and forth between thumb and forefinger as Mr. Makoff approaches, hand extended. Without moving to accept, John looks down at the hand as if he’d been extended a rotted carcass.
